After the dark, oppressive tones of "Neon Bible", Butler and co. return with something most unexpected - a pop album. At least, what a think a good modern pop album should sound like. Brave, emotive lyrics. Diverse instrumentation. Showing their influences, but looking forward all the time. The Suburbs is thought provoking, it demands attention from the listener. Tracks like "Empty Room" and "Month of May" are full of immediacy that drags the listener in, but are contrasted by grand, epic songs like "Ready to Start" and "Suburban Warfare" and minor-heavy tunes like "Rococo" and "Sprawl (Flatland). Quite simply, a must have album, powerful, intellectual and interesting. A classic in years to come.
